From 2003 to 2005, Elisa volunteered at Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary as a zookeeper assistant until she moved to Arcata to attend Humboldt State University, where her favorite classes were Herpetology, Animal Development, and Comparative Anatomy. In Spring 2010, she graduated with a BS in Zoology, and joined the Sequoia Park Zoo team as a late keeper and volunteer in later that year.
