In operation since 1907, the Sequoia Park Zoo has long been considered one of the most important cultural facilities in the area.
Sequoia Park Zoo provides a facility that would otherwise not be available to more than a half million people. The Zoo's goals include conservation, education and recreation. The Sequoia Park Zoo is proud to be one of the smallest institutions that is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Sequoia Park Zoo serves as a valuable recreational and educational resource for more than ten counties in Northwestern California. It is the only accredited zoological park on the Pacific Coast between San Francisco and Portland.
The mission of the Sequoia Park Zoo is to inspire wonder, understanding, and respect for the natural world by providing fun, rewarding, educational experiences that encourage meaningful connections between animals, humans, and our environment.
The Sequoia Park Zoo is operated by the City of Eureka and supported by the Sequoia Park Zoo Foundation.
Featured animal exhibits
Featured animal exhibits include a walk-through aviary with a variety of bird species in free flight, "The Barnyard" with contact corral, bear, flamingos, spider monkeys, the "Secrets of the Forest" exhibit showcasing native reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and more. More information about directions and admission under Visit the Zoo!
The Barnyard (top)
The Barnyard offers fun things to do for kids of all
ages. You’ll meet many of the animals found in and around a barnyard. Donkeys, sheep, goats, alpacas, rabbits, and chickens are just a few of the animals that call the Sequoia Park Zoo home. You can also enjoy mice and opossums in the cupboards and honeybees in the walls, and keep an eye out for Chester our barnyard cat as he parades around the zoo. Jack, our friendly barnyard dog, will likely seek attention from new Barnyard friends. He will graciously receive any pats and scratches you wish to send his way.
The Contact Corral lets you mingle with the animals and groom the goats and sheep. It is a great way to give children hands on contact with some of their favorite farm animals. The Kids Koop offers interactive fun on the farm for children of all ages. Take a hand at milking Nellie our pretend goat, imagine what its like to sit in the saddle of our “stationary” pony, Arnold, or even make-believe you are plowing through the fields of a farm on our trusty tractor.
The Secrets of the Forest (top)
The Secrets of the Forest is our newest addition, completed in the summer of
2005. Instead of the traditional exhibits that showcase just one species, the Secrets of the Forest incorporates multiple species that share a common thread in a particular ecological story. The story they tell is centered around our beautiful and complex local ecosystem, the coastal redwood forests of northern California and the hidden creatures that live here.
You can watch native pond turtles swim under a waterfall, garter snakes basking in a tree, termites creating a network of burrows inside a fallen log, and learn just how banana slugs move, with an underneath view of the action! Visit our interactive displays, to hear the calls of some of our best-known local avifauna and more.
The Aviary (top)
Going to the Birds! The Sequoia Park Zoo has a large aviary with local and tropical birds in a naturalized environment. Birds like the Red-crested turaco and the Cedar waxwing share a lush environment that allows them to fly from tree to tree. Take a walk through and enjoy the calming sound of chirping birds and running water or take a seat on one of the benches inside. You just might be lucky enough to receive a visit from our resident Sacred ibis. The large black and white bird just might approach you, but only if you are quiet enough.
