The zoo is celebrating National Zookeeper Week starting July 20 with keeper talks, animal encounters, a raffle and other special activities for visitors of all ages.

The week-long raffle theme this year is “Jeans for Giraffes” to raise money for giraffe conservation. Zoo visitors will have the opportunity to win a special behind-the-scenes tour of the zoo by donating pairs of old jeans at the ticket booth; zoo visitors will receive one raffle ticket for every donated pair of jeans. The winner’s name will be drawn on Saturday, July 26.

The Redwood Coast chapter of the American Association of Zookeepers (AAZK) will host additional keeper talks during the week and provide special activities for zoo visitors.

Sunday, July 20, 12 – 2 p.m.: Enrichment for Pets: Zoo keepers will teach visitors about the benefits of enrichment for animals, and how to provide enrichment activities for pets at home.‘Enrichment’ encompasses objects and activities designed to stimulate and challenge natural behaviors and promote overall well being.

Wednesday, July 23, 12 – 2 p.m.: Making Enrichment: Visitors of all ages can help make enrichment objects for the zoo animals. The animals will receive their new “toys” on Saturday, July 26.
